Phylogeny and morphology of four new species of Lasiodiplodia from Iran Naturalis
Abdollahzadeh, J.; Javadi, A.; Mohammadi Goltapeh, E.; Zare, R.; Phillips, A.J.L..
Four new species of Lasiodiplodia; L. citricola, L. gilanensis, L. hormozganensis and L. iraniensis from various tree species in Iran are described and illustrated. The ITS and partial translation elongation factor-1α sequence data were analysed to investigate their phylogenetic relationships with other closely related species and genera. The four new species formed well-supported clades within Lasiodiplodia and were morphologically distinct from all other known species.

Barriopsis iraniana and Phaeobotryon cupressi: two new species of the Botryosphaeriaceae from trees in Iran Naturalis
Abdollahzadeh, J.; Mohammadi Goltapeh, E.; Javadi, A.; Shams-bakhsh, M.; Zare, R.; Phillips:, A.J.L..
Species in the Botryosphaeriaceae are well known as pathogens and saprobes of woody hosts, but little is known about the species that occur in Iran. In a recent survey of this family in Iran two fungi with diplodia-like anamorphs were isolated from various tree hosts. These two fungi were fully characterised in terms of morphology of the anamorphs in culture, and sequences of the ITS1/ITS2 regions of the ribosomal DNA operon and partial sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-α. Phylogenetic analyses placed them within a clade consisting of Barriopsis and Phaeobotryon species, but they were clearly distinct from known species in these genera. Therefore, they are described here as two new species, namely Barriopsis iraniana on Citrus, Mangifera and...

The generic affinity of Caiophora pulchella (Loasaceae, Loasoideae) Darwiniana
Acuña Castillo,Rafael; Weigend,Maximilian.
The history of the nomenclatural changes and past hypotheses on the relationships of Caiophora pulchella are presented. The identity of voucher specimens, identified as C. nivalis in previous phylogenetic studies, is reassessed based on fruit morphology. The validity of C. pulchella is reconsidered and can be confirmed as a member of the genus Caiophora based on both morphological and molecular data. Alternative generic placements are rejected.

The Phylogenetic Position of Anaplasma bovis and Inferences on the Phylogeny of the Genus Anaplasma OAK
Adrian Patalinghug YBAÑEZ; SASHIKA, Mariko; INOKUMA, Hisashi; 猪熊, 壽.
The present study aimed to determine the complete citrate synthase (gltA) and heat-shock protein (groEL) gene sequences of Anaplasma bovis and to infer phylogenetic relationships within the genus Anaplasma. Multiple alignments from single and concatenated sequences of the 16S rRNA, gltA and groEL genes of the genus Anaplasma were subjected to phylogenetic analyses. Percent identities of A. bovis nucleotide sequences were found highest with A. phagocytophilum in gltA (65.4%) and groEL (79.8%). Single gene phylogenetic tree results assumed similar phylogenetic positions within the genus Anaplasma, except for A. bovis. However, consensus and concatenated sequence phylogenetic trees showed similar results, revealing 2 subgroups within the genus.

Revision of Geranium sections Azorelloida, Neoandina, and Paramensia (Geraniaceae) Naturalis
Aedo, C.; Aldasoro, J.J.; Navarro, C..
The sections Azorelloida, Neoandina, and Paramensia of Geranium, all of them from the Andes, are taxonomically revised. Fruits with the ‘seed ejection-type’ dispersal have been found in all species, which allows classifying them within subg. Geranium. The sections Azorelloida and Paramensia consist of one and two species respectively, while section Neoandina comprises 24 taxa. Prior to this revision, the stemless species of Geranium from the Andes have been considered to belong to sect. Andina. Geranium sessiliflorum (type of Geranium sect. Andina), however, should be included in sect. Chilensia. Therefore, recently a new sect. Neoandina has been described to include most of the sect. Andina species (Aedo, 2000). Diagnostic morphological features are...

Molecular characterization of Indian pathotypes of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici and multigene phylogenetic analysis to establish inter- and intraspecific relationships Genet. Mol. Biol.
Aggarwal,Rashmi; Kulshreshtha,Deepika; Sharma,Sapna; Singh,Vaibhav K.; Manjunatha,Channappa; Bhardwaj,Subhash C.; Saharan,Mahender S..
Abstract Stripe rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat (Triticum spp.) worldwide. Indian isolates were characterised based on their phenotypic reaction on differential hosts carrying different Yr genes. Based on virulence/avirulence structure, isolates were characterised into ten different pathotypes viz. 70S0-2, 67S64, 70S4, 66S0, 70S64, 66S64-1, 38S102, 47S102, 46S119, and 78S84. These Indian pathotypes of P. striiformis f. sp. tritici and 38 pathotypes of other rust species (P. graminis tritici and P. triticina) were used in this study to analyze their molecular phylogenetic relationship. The nucleotides of rDNA-ITS, partial β-tubulin and ketopantoate reductase genes of all the...

Jenynsia luxata, a new species from Northwestern Argentina, with additional observations of J. maculataRegan and phylogeny of the genus (Cyprinodontiformes: Anablepidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Aguilera,Gastón; Mirande,Juan Marcos; Calviño,Pablo A.; Lobo,Luis Fernando.
Jenynsia luxata, a new species from northwestern Argentina, is described. This species is diagnosable from all other Jenynsia by the medial processes of left and right pelvic bones relatively reduced and separated from each other. The new species resembles J. multidentata, but it is further distinguished from this species by the absence of a swelling between the urogenital opening and the anterior base of the anal fin in females and details of coloration. Phylogenetic analyses, both under implied and equal weighting, recover the subgenera Plesiojenynsia and Jenynsia as monophyletic units. New information on previously missing characters of Jenynsia maculata is added. These data and phylogenetic characters coded for the new species herein described...

Evolutionary history of the seagrass genus Posidonia ArchiMer
Aires, Tania; Marba, Nuria; Cunha, Regina L.; Kendrick, Gary A.; Walker, Diana I.; Serrao, Ester A.; Duarte, Carlos M.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
Seagrasses are the structural species of one of the most important coastal ecosystems worldwide and support high levels of biodiversity and biomass production. Posidonia is one of the most ancient seagrass genera and displays a contrasting disjunct biogeographic pattern. It contains one single species in the Northern Hemisphere, P. oceanica, which is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, and has up to 8 recognized taxa in the Southern Hemisphere, which in Australia are divided into 2 complexes, P. ostenfeldii and P. australis. A phylogeny based on a nuclear marker (rRNA-ITS) revealed an ancient split between the northern (i.e. Mediterranean) and southern (i.e. Australian) taxa, followed by a separation of the 2 recognized Australian complexes. However, the...

Phylogenetic characterization of the bacterial assemblage associated with mucous. secretions of the hydrothermal vent polychaete Paralvinella palmiformis ArchiMer
Alain, Karine; Olagnon, Michel; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Page, Antoine; Barbier, Georges; Juniper, Kim; Querellou, Joel; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne.
As part of an ongoing examination of microbial diversity associated with hydrothermal vent polychaetes of the family Alvinellidae, we undertook a culture-independent molecular analysis of the bacterial assemblage associated with mucous secretions of the Northeastern Pacific vent polychaete Paralvinella palmiformis. Using a molecular 16S rDNA-based phylogenetic approach, clone libraries were constructed from two samples collected from active sulfide edifices in two hydrothermal vent fields. In both cases, clone libraries were largely dominated by epsilon-Proteobacteria. Phylotypes belonging to the Cytophaga-Flavobacteria and to the Verrucomicrobia were also largely represented within the libraries. The remaining sequences were related to the taxonomic...

Polychaeta, Annelida, and Articulata are not monophyletic: articulating the Metameria (Metazoa, Coelomata) Zoologia
Almeida,Waltécio de Oliveira; Christoffersen,Martin Lindsey; Amorim,Dalton de Souza; Garraffoni,André Rinaldo Senna; Silva,Gustavo Sene.
Polychaetes are metameric worms recognized for having parapodia, chaetae, and nuchal organs. Some authors have extended the Annelida to include Pogonophora, Echiura, and Clitellata. These suggestions are insufficient to generate a monophyletic group. They do not take into account two very large and important clades that in a cladistic analysis at a higher level are shown to be nested within the Annelida: the Ecdysozoa (arthropods and related taxa) and Enterocoela (deuterostomes and related taxa). Evolutionary histories of most characters across metazoan phyla are still very poorly known. Metameres and coeloms have been considered homoplastic in the literature, and yet the homeobox genes responsible for the expression of metamerism and of paired appendages,...

Gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary system of Characidae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Characiformes) and potential phylogenetic information Neotropical Ichthyology
Alonso,Felipe; Mirande,Juan Marcos; Pandolfi,Matías.
A compared study of the morphology of the alimentary tract and liver of seven selected species corresponding to the main clades of the Characidae family is presented herein. Three new set of characters corresponding to 1) alimentary tract gross anatomy, 2) alimentary tract histology and 3) liver gross anatomy are evaluated as potential sources of data for future phylogenetic studies of the Characidae. Not considerable interspecific variation was observed at the histological level and therefore this source is not considered to be phylogenetically informative at the taxonomic level analyzed. In contrast, liver and alimentary tract gross anatomy presented important interspecific variation while a relatively homogenous intraspecific morphology was observed....

Phylogeny and biogeography of midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae): a reappraisal Naturalis
Altaba, Cristian R..
The allozyme data base of Arntzen & García-París (1995) on midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae) is reanalysed considering each locus as a discrete character. The phylogeny thus inferred differs from the one obtained with genetic distances in the position of A. dickhilleni from the Betic region – it appears that its sister species is the widespread A. obstetricans, not the Mallorcan endemic A. muletensis. This phylogenetic hypothesis agrees with the taxonomic treatment of the genus based on morphology. A testable biogeographic hypothesis is proposed to account for the diversification of midwife toads in Iberia and the Balearics. The postulated underlying geological changes were the spread of inland saline lakes that divided Iberia (16 mY B.P.), the...

Inclusion of Dasyochloa in the amphitropical genus Munroa (Poaceae, Chloridoideae) based on morphological evidence Darwiniana
Amarilla,Leonardo D; Chiapella,Jorge O; Nagahama,Nicolás; Anton,Ana M.
Munroa is a morphologically heterogeneous American genus of grasses, including five species with disjunct distribution in North and South America. Dasyochloa is a monotypic grass genus, common in western North America, with a controversial taxonomic position, because it has been alternatively included in Erioneuron, Koeleria, Triodia, and Uralepis. We evaluated the relationship of Dasyochloa with Munroa using a phylogenetic analysis of qualitative and quantitative morphological data. Dasyochloa was not supported as an independent genus from Munroa, as Dasyochloa and Munroa species formed a monophyletic group defined by seven synapomorphies. On this basis, we transfer Dasyochloa to Munroa, and propose the new combination M. pulchella together with the...
